New Interventions: Parents Guide Teens to Save Sex for Later

Early sexual initiation can lead to many negative health and social consequences, including sexually transmitted infections and AIDS. Saving Sex for Later is an innovative, evidence-based audio CD program created by HHD that educates parents about how to help their sons and daughters remain abstinent during the critical adolescent years and navigate the normal changes in puberty and the challenges of becoming a teenager. A culturally-appropriate version in Spanish engages Latino parents in conversations with their children.

Reach and Impact

Communication between parents and their children about puberty, romantic relationships, and sexual activity improves (compared to a control group) when parents use the Saving Sex for Later CDs. As a result, these youth report greater family support, the benefit of family rules, and fewer sexual risk behaviors.
