Health and Human Development (HHD) is a division of Education Development Center, Inc., a global nonprofit organization that has advanced solutions to some of the world’s most urgent challenges in education, health, and economic development since 1958.
HHD promotes healthy human development across the life cycle and around the globe. Our efforts span the continuum from health promotion to disease prevention, intervention, and care. We concentrate on major health issues such as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; HIV and sexually transmitted diseases; mental health; unintentional injuries; reproductive health; and nutrition and fitness.
Since economic, social, and cultural conditions can have a profound impact on healthy human development, our efforts also tackle the challenges that make some populations more vulnerable to illness, injury, or death.
HHD strengthens the capacity of organizations on or near the frontlines. We promote health and prevent disease or injury by providing professional development, designing interventions, developing curricula, and conducting research and evaluation. We work across sectors including education, public health, health care, social services, mental health, and criminal justice at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Additional health challenges are on the horizon—an aging society, population growth, and the impact of globalization on issues like immigration, energy, and the environment. We will continue to use our expertise across disciplines, along with new technologies, to improve the essential conditions of life that promote human development.
