Developing State and Local Policies and Programs: CAPT
Substance abuse generates an incalculable expense not only for treatment and related illnesses, but also for lost work productivity, crime, domestic violence, homicide and suicide. Yet substance abuse and its associated consequences can be prevented.
With federal funding, HHD leads the National Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT). CAPT and its regional partners provide training and technical assistance that strengthens the planning and delivery of substance abuse prevention and related issues in states, communities, jurisdictions, and tribes throughout the country.
Previously HHD managed the Northeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (NECAPT) for more than ten years, working with state and local agencies in the Northeastern U.S. to prevent and reduce substance abuse across the lifespan by applying prevention programs, practices, and policies shown to be effective in combating alcohol abuse or other drugs, such as methamphetamine.
Thousands of prevention practitioners have benefited from this support, resulting in state-level policy change and improved service delivery to people in hundreds of communities nationwide.
