HIV/AIDS Peer Education Program
In 2006, HHD partnered with the Red Cross to train peer educators at Trinidad’s St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies to teach HIV/AIDS information to their peers. Using the “Together We Can” curriculum for HIV/AIDS prevention, enhanced for the university level, each certified peer educator was expected to reach 10 of his/her peers with every “Together We Can” activity.
To evaluate the impact of this program, a pre-post survey was designed to measure changes in HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors as a result of participation in “Together We Can.” The program demonstrated preliminary positive results, with reported reductions in the number of sexual partners and reduction in students’ attitudes regarding stigma and discrimination toward people living with HIV and AIDS.
