What HHD Does

Teen Mental Health Survey

Techniques used: qualitative interviews, focus groups, mixed methods approach

As many as one in five teens experience mental health problems, including depression, suicidal tendencies, substance abuse, and conduct and other disorders. Most are underserved by the mental health service system. This is especially true for economically disadvantaged urban youth, many of whom are African American and Latino.

This National Institute of Mental Health-funded study is designed to better understand how to support families and improve the functioning of adolescents experiencing mental health problems. The core study consists of interviews with approximately one hundred 9th grade students and their primary caretaking parents, and a series of focus groups with youth and parents. Findings will inform the development of future family education and mental health services to youth and families.
