Sexuality and Reproductive Health
The world population, currently 6.5 billion, is expected to hit 9 billion by mid-century. The extent of population growth and its impact on individuals and the planet depends on the birth rates of future generations.
Of particular concern is the sexual and reproductive health of young people. Each year there are close to 15 million births worldwide to girls 15–19 years old. Pregnancy among adolescents is often unintended and can result in negative consequences. Adolescent girls, especially in developing countries, face increased risk of death in pregnancy and complications during delivery. Young mothers experience limited educational and economic opportunities and are more likely to live in poverty. Their children also confront risks—low birth weight, death during infancy, and long-term disabilities.
HHD works with organizations worldwide to strengthen the reproductive and sexual health of their communities, with a focus on preventing early or unplanned pregnancies in young women’s lives.
