Care: AIDS Orphans in Asia
The HIV and AIDS epidemic has left hundreds of thousands of children orphans in Thailand, India, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam. Some end up on the streets; others stay with relatives or grandparents who often earn very little money to care for them. In addition, the stigmatization and misconceptions about the disease which took the lives of their parents typically isolate them from peers, neighbors, and teachers.
With funding from Deutsche Bank and in partnership with local and international organizations, HHD provides the orphans in these countries with support and the opportunity to continue their education. Thousands of youth have benefited in different ways—through non-formal education in literacy, math and life skills; scholarships that pay for school supplies and exams; vocational training and business loans; as well as psychosocial services such as counseling, workshops for their relatives, and special events that bring these children together.
Our support also extends into the community—providing prevention education and building the capacity of local organizations to address these orphans’ needs.
