U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools Studies confirm that students at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and African American students in general drink far less than do students at predominantly white institutions. This Infofacts/Resources examines the findings of studies on the prevalence of alcohol and other drug (AOD) use at HBCUs, looks at the nature of the environment that HBCUs create for their students that has led to lower rates of AOD use than at predominantly white institutions, and offers some recommendations for moving forward.
