HHD Our Approach

nonprofit organizations leverage the power of business for community benefit.
HHD Looks at Sustainability from all Angles
"The essence of sustainability is how to think about the 'big picture,' i.e., what is contributing overall to the health and mental health of children, youth, and families," says Deborah Haber, Director of the National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention, housed at HHD.

HHD is a leader in conducting and applying research for healthy human development worldwide. We conduct original research and evaluate program outcomes, as well as synthesize and apply the research of others.

We aim to:

  • Identify risk and protective factors that promote health and prevent injury, violence, and disease;
  • Evaluate program outcomes and interventions that reduce risk factors and improve health;
  • Inform the development of policies, programs, strategies, and materials that promote health and prevent risk behaviors;
  • Assess organizational readiness to implement research-based strategies.

HHD operates several resource centers, which serve national, state, and local agencies in the U.S., and ministries of education and health internationally. These centers provide a variety of services to build the capacity of organizations to implement research-based findings and improve policy making and practice. Our staff are expert in identifying, selecting, disseminating, adapting, and evaluating research-based interventions and strategies.
