Bullying Prevention: HHD's Multiple Strategies

Bullying is a form of abuse that doesn't affect just its victims. It has an impact on aggressors who may suffer long term from their own violent behavior and on bystanders who feel powerless to prevent the violence.

Health and Human Development Programs is addressing this type of violence on many fronts with innovative curriculum and a ground-breaking video, and through ongoing education for grantees who are most likely to encounter bullying situations.

HHD’s research, products and training in bullying prevention seek to guide practice toward the most effective policies and programs that foster healthy lifestyles and create healthy, safe environments where people live, learn, and work. The following includes HHD’s latest work in the area of bullying prevention:

  • The MetLife Foundation Read for Health Program incorporates a middle-grades curriculum and materials for parents on the powerful theme of bullying. The curriculum -- created by EDC’s HHD and Center for Family, School, and Community (FSC) divisions -- reinforces students’ reading and writing skills and teaches them how to address bullying situations.

  • "Voices Against Violence," a new video slated for release in August by HHD, explores the critical role bystanders — both adults and youth -- can play in preventing school violence. The 26-minute video takes a real-life look at the complicated issues bystanders face and prompts middle-school viewers to consider ways in which they can have a positiv e impact when they see bullying taking place.
