About HHD

Reach and Impact of Our Work

We address many of the world's most challenging health issues in our effort to improve the well-being of people of all ages. The following are some specific examples.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs

Over 100 web-based substance abuse prevention courses delivered by HHD have reached nearly 3,000 state- and community-level practitioners who might not have been able to travel to workshops or trainings. Evaluation results consistently reveal substantive and statistically significant improvement in participants' knowledge and skills.

HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections

By 2010, every student in Botswana's primary and secondary schools will be using the HHD-developed school health curricula and will be taught by a trained teacher.

Injuries

Youth @ Work: Talking Safety, an occupational safety and health curriculum developed by HHD and the University of California at Berkeley, was used in school systems and job training programs in 18 states. Reaching tens of thousands of high school-aged youth, results show increased awareness about potential hazards and how to create safer workplaces.

Mental Health

The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention has provided training and technical assistance to more than 300 school districts and their community partners in 49 states who establish Safe Schools/Healthy Students programs and services, keeping well over six million children healthy and safe.

Reproductive Health

Communication between parents and their children about puberty, romantic relationships, and sexual activity improves (compared to a control group) when parents use the Saving Sex for Later CDs. As a result, these youth report greater family support, the benefit of family rules, and fewer sexual risk behaviors.

Suicide

Over 10,000 mental health professionals have participated in Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk, a training developed by SPRC which has shown to significantly increase clinicians' confidence and competence with suicidal patients.
